About EB-1A Visa
The EB-1A visa is a U.S. employment-based immigrant visa designed for individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ability in their field.
To qualify, applicants must show sustained national or international recognition and prove that their work has had significant impact within their field.
Unlike many other visa categories, the EB-1A allows individuals to apply without a job offer or employer sponsorship-you can self-petition based on your achievements alone.
The EB-1A is part of the First Preference (EB-1) category, reserved for individuals with the highest levels of professional distinction. Because of its priority status, the EB-1A is often not subject to long visa backlogs, making it one of the fastest pathways to U.S. permanent residency for qualified individuals.
Approved applicants and their spouses and unmarried children under 21 can obtain Green Cards and live and work permanently in the United States.
Key benefits
No employer sponsorship required
You can apply independently without needing a U.S. employer.
Faster processing timelines
Due to its First Preference status, EB-1A applicants often face shorter wait times.
Direct path to permanent residency
Approval leads to a U.S. Green Card for you and eligible family members.
Career flexibility
You are free to work, change jobs, or start a business without immigration restrictions.
Path to U.S. citizenship
Green Card holders can apply for naturalization after meeting residency requirements.
High credibility classification

Eligibility
To qualify for the EB-1A visa, you must demonstrate that you are among the small percentage of individuals at the very top of your field.
Option 1: Major International Award
You have received a one-time, internationally recognized award of major significance, such as:
- Nobel Prize
- Olympic Medal
- Other globally recognized honors
Option 2: Meet at Least 3 of 10 Criteria

- Membership in associations that require outstanding achievement
- Published material about you in major media or professional publications
- Evidence of judging the work of others
- Evidence of original contributions of major significance

What USCIS Evaluates
- The quality and credibility of your evidence
- The impact and influence of your work
- The consistency of your achievements over time
- The strength of your professional narrative
Many applicants underestimate their profile because their achievements feel 'normal' within their environment, even when they reflect significant impact at a broader level. If your work has influenced your field, been recognized by peers or institutions, or created measurable outcomes-you may already be closer to eligibility than you think. The key is not just what you have done, but how clearly and convincingly it can be demonstrated.
Application process
Step 1: Determine Eligibility & Prepare Evidence
Identify whether your achievements meet EB-1A standards and gather supporting documentation.
Step 2: File Form I-140 (Immigrant Petition)
As an EB-1A applicant, you can self-petition without an employer.
Step 3: Priority Date & Visa Availability
Track visa availability through the Visa Bulletin.
Step 4: Apply for Permanent Residency
If in the U.S.: File Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status). If outside the U.S.: Complete DS-260 (Consular Processing).
Step 5: Biometrics & Medical Examination
Submit fingerprints and required medical documentation.
Step 6: Interview & Decision
Attend interview (if required) and receive final decision. If approved, you and eligible family members receive Green Cards.
